PREFACE

What is it about watercolor painting that turns you on?

I don’t recall ever having been asked this question. But this thought came to mind while reading a book about Andrew Wyeth in the library of Summer Studios Arts Academy in Lomita, CA, where I teach watercolor painting.

Most books about watercolor painting focus on an individual artist’s techniques. And they often contain lots of photos about tools and techniques. But this book I was reading was different … more introspective. It discussed numerous personal aspects about his career … why he painted and what motivated him to write about his work.

I hope I’m able to accomplish much the same thing … and by doing so, get you more personally committed to painting watercolors!

I first started writing about this subject some time ago. And frankly, I have to admit that the initial focus of my efforts was, like many other books by artists, on tools and techniques. But after awhile, I started getting into the business aspects of painting: how does one go about marketing and exhibiting their work, framing and matting their paintings, and pricing their work, etc.? I realized there was a lot more to discuss than simply how to paint. Having reached the end of my writing journey, I believe I’ve accomplished what I had hoped to achieve in writing this book.

There’s nothing that says you have to write about your work, but each artist should consider doing so for any number of reasons. Self-analysis is one good reason, whether it’s about your painting or anything else in life. But recognize also that what you write may not only help YOU become a better artist, it might actually end up helping someone else… Now wouldn’t that be great!

So I urge you to jot down some notes about your own career as you read my book. Determine where you are, but also where you’d like to be. Establish objectives, a timeline perhaps with respect to your career. Reflect upon what I’ve said about my own career, using what I’ve said to help you examine yours … where you’ve been and are, but, more importantly, where you’d like to be. Then consider the wide range of options available to help you accomplish this.

I hope what I’ve written will be helpful to you! My wish is to motivate you to do something, jot down some thoughts of your own, establish objectives, and develop a plan of ACTION!

This is bound to help you produce excellent artwork!

Sincerely, Douglas Simms Stenhouse
