watercolor estuary, watercolor field with rivers, Douglas Stenhouse Watercolor Art

This painting was done in the Fall of 2007 at the SLO Plein-Air Festival.  The weather conditions were changing all the time, but it prompted me to incorporate them in this painting.  The conditions also inspired me to do this painting which has received considerable recognition.  The colors are very vibrant, and the scene is absolutely lovely!

Painting outside is always challenging!  You have to prepare yourself for various weather conditions.  I bring along garments that will not only protect me from the elements but allow me to be reasonably comfortable during my paintout.

The Estuary at Morro Bay is unique and has attracted me to do several other paintings about this same area.  While I was at this site in July 2011 I was amazed to see the entire basin covered with water during a very high tide!  Other times the water may be almost entirely absent!  You have to be aware of such things … and plan ahead before you go out painting!  The variations that may occur in subject matter can create all kinds of challenges … but also opportunities!  I have learned, therefore, one can obviously create any number of lovely compositions in and about this estuary … from different vantage points … as I have done over the years!

That’s what makes such places very special!  I love to be there because I’ll never run out of opportunities that inspire me to do my best work!

Douglas Stenhouse also wrote a book about watercolor painting.

“I decided to write about how I paint, not only to share my observations with others, but also, frankly, to do some self- examination. I wish I had done this earlier in my life! But then, how was I to know I’d benefit from doing so, certainly at a time when I had no aspirations of becoming a professional artist.”
